I. OBJECTIVES
A. General
1. To discuss the various doctrines found in the parable of the sower and the seeds.
B. Specific
1. To teach the various results of the Gospel in the lives of the hearers.
2. To show the responsibility to be a sower and where that responsibility ends.
3. To show the dangers of the devil's attacks and the fruitfulness of believers.
INTRODUCTION
The parable of the sower and the seed is perhaps a bit different than others, for the Lord Himself gives the interpretation of the parable. Not only that, but it is provided in three of the four Gospels. You will find it in the text, plus in Matt 13:1-23 and Luke 8:4-15. We have here some great Bible teaching about spreading the good news of Jesus Christ, about the responsibility of the sowers, and the results of that sowing. This is a lesson which is very timely for the Spring season in which we now find ourselves. READ THIS OUTLINE CAREFULLY, FOR YOU WILL NEED SOME TEACHING AIDS AHEAD OF CLASS TIME!
Texts: MAR 4:1-20 And he began again to teach by the sea side: and there was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship, and sat in the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land. [2] And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine, [3] Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow: [4] And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up. [5] And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth: [6] But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away. [7] And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit. [8] And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred. [9] And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. [10] And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable. [11] And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables: [12] That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them. [13] And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables? [14] The sower soweth the word. [15] And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. [16] And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; [17] And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended. [18] And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, [19] And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. [20] And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred.
LESSON PLAN I. OBJECTIVES A. General 1. To discuss the various doctrines found in the parable of the sower and the seeds. B. Specific 1. To teach the various results of the Gospel in the lives of the hearers. 2. To show the responsibility to be a sower and where that responsibility ends. 3. To show the dangers of the devil's attacks and the fruitfulness of believers. II. Presentation A. Teacher's presentation 1. Scriptural Basis a. EXPOSITORY:MAR 4:1 And he began again to teach by the sea side: and there was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship, and sat in the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land.
JESUS KNEW THE EFFECT ON HIS VOICE OF SITTING IN THE BOAT. THE BREEZE USUALLY BLOWS INLAND FROM THE WATER, THUS NATURALLY AMPLIFYING HIS WORDS.
[2] And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine,
REMEMBER, THE WORD DOCTRINE SIMPLY MEANS TEACHING.
[3] Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow: [4] And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up.
NOTICE THAT THE SOWER DID HIS JOB -- HE SOWED THE SEEDS.
NOTICE NEXT THAT THE FOLLOWING SEEDS DID NOT DO WELL: THAT WHICH FELL BY THE WAY SIDE - EATEN BY BIRDS THAT WHICH FELL ON STONY GROUND - DIED FROM LACK OF GOOD SOIL THAT WHICH FELL AMONG THORNS - CHOCKED BY THEIR COMPANIONS
NOTICE THIRDLY, THAT THE SOWER WAS NOT CONDEMNED IN ANY OF THESE SITUATIONS -- HIS JOB WAS TO SOW AS BEST HE COULD.
ILLUSTRATION - TAKE AN OLD PILLOW CASE, TWO PAPERTOWEL ROLLS AND SOME DUCT TAPE. CUT AN OPENING IN A CLOSED END OF THE PILLOWCASE, INSERT THE TUBES, AND TAPE THEM SO THAT THEY FORM A "WAND" COMING OUT THE CORNER. IMAGINE THE BAG FILLED WITH SEED, WHICH WOULD FLOW DOWN THROUGH THE CASE, OUT THE TUBE AS IT IS SWUNG FROM SIDE TO SIDE AS THE SOWER WALKS THROUGH THE FIELD. HE IS TO WALK AND SWING, WALK AND SWING. HE CANNOT CONTROL EVERY TINY GRAIN OF SEED!
HAVE ALFALFA AND CLOVER SEED TO SHOW EACH CLASS. BRING YOUR SEED "BROADCASTER" WHICH WAS ACTUALLY THE NAME OF THE DEVICE YOU ARE MAKING. OH, YES, PUT A STRAP ACROSS THE TOP TO LOOP OVER YOUR SHOULDER AS YOU WALK WITH THE BROADCASTER.
[8] And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred.
HERE IS THE FIRST OF THE SEEDS TO PRODUCE FRUIT! ONLY ONE OUT OF THE FOUR!
NOTICE ALSO THAT THE SEEDS PRODUCED DIFFERENT AMOUNTS OF FRUIT.
[9] And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. THIS PHRASE SIMPLY MEANS, "LISTEN CAREFULLY!"
JESUS EXPLAINED THAT THE PEOPLE WHO "ARE WITHOUT" -- THE ONES WHO REFUSED TO LISTEN WITH AN OPEN HEART TO THE WORD OF GOD AS HE TAUGHT IT WERE CONDEMNING THEMSELVES, AND THAT HE WOULD NOT "WASTE TIME ON THOSE WHO HE KNEW WERE REJECTING HIM."
GOD IS A GOD OF LOVE AND CONCERN AND COMPASSION, BUT HE IS ALSO NOT ABOUT TO WASTE TIME WITH THOSE WHOSE HEARTS REJECT THE GOSPEL MESSAGE.
[14] The sower soweth the word.
THE WORD. GOD'S HOLY WORD. IF YOU ARE TO BE AN EFFECTIVE WITNESS IT WILL NOT BE WITH WISE AND CLEVER WORDS -- WITH GREAT HIGH-SOUNDING ARGUMENTS. IT WILL BE BY SPEAKING GOD'S HOLY WORD IN A SPIRIT OF CONCERN AND CONFIDENCE. THE SOWER SOWED THE WORD.
"FAITH COMETH BY HEARING AND HEARING BY THE WORD OF GOD!" (ROM. 10:17)
[15] And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. THE ONES BY THE WAYSIDE (THE HIGHWAY OR ROAD - HARD-PACKED SOIL) = PEOPLE WHO HEAR THE GOSPEL PRESENTED, BUT THE DEVIL "TAKES AWAY THE WORD."
HOW COULD HE DO THAT? BY THEIR LOVE OF EVIL ACTIVITIES, ATTITUDES, MUSIC, ETC. HE ""LITERALLY DROWNS OUT THE GOSPEL."
THERE IS NO INDICATION THAT THESE WERE EVER SAVED. THEY WERE NOT IN THE WAY, BUT BY THE WAYSIDE!
[16] And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; [17] And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended.
THE ONES ON "STONY GROUND" HEARD THE WORD AND RECEIVE IT WITH GLADNESS HAVE NO ROOT IN THEMSELVES NOTICE THIS PHRASE, "HAVE NO ROOT IN THEMSELVES." THEY LACK DEPTH OF CHARACTER. THEY ARE THE ONES LOOKING FOR THE "EASY LIFE" THEY "ENDURE FOR A TIME" - THEIR CHRISTIAN WALK IS "STUNTED" BY AFFLICTION OR PERSECUTION FOR THE WORD'S SAKE. IE, BEING A CHRISTIAN BRINGS CRITICISM INTO THEIR LIFE, OR COSTS THEM SOMETHING THEY HOLD DEAR. THEY ARE OFFENDED.
OFFENDED = Greek_4624. skandalizo, skan-dal-id'-zo; ("scandalize"); from Grk_4625; to entrap, i.e. trip up (fig. stumble [trans.] or entice to sin, apostasy or displeasure):-(make to) offend.
THIS GROUP IS PROBABLY SAVED, BUT SO IMMATURE AND CARNAL THAT AN OBSERVER WOULD NEVER KNOW IT.
SADLY, I WAS THIS WAY AS A YOUNG MAN WHO FOUND THE CHRISTIAN LIFE AS OBSERVED TOO "DULL" FOR MY LIKING. IT COST ME FIFTEEN YEARS OF FELLOWSHIP WITH THE LORD TO RECOVER.
[18] And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, [19] And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
THE FINAL GROUP IN THE UNFRUITFUL ONES, ALSO ARE SAVED (HEAR AND RECEIVE IT).
BUT THEY LOSE THEIR FRUITFULNESS THROUGH: 1. CARES OF THIS WORLD - THEY ARE HORIZONTAL IN THEIR THINKING THEY ARE NOT "SPIRITUALLY MINDED," MOST LIKELY NOT ATTENDING ANY CHURCH, OR ONE WHICH DOES NOT TEACH THE WORLD. 2. THE DECEITFULNESS OF RICHES - THEY ARE MATERIALISTIC.
THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS "RICH." THE WORD DOES NOT SAY THEY ATTAINED RICHES, THOUGH THEY MAY HAVE. IT SAYS THEY WERE MISLED BY THE MATERIALISM IN THEIR LIVES. THE "LOVE OF MONEY IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL," (1 TIM 6:10) NOT JUST MONEY IN AND OF ITSELF. 3. THE LUSTS OF OTHER THINGS ENTERING IN - THEY SET THEIR SIGHTS ON OTHER THINGS BESIDE THE LORD, HIS WORD AND SERVICE TO HIM.
WHAT OTHER THINGS? -- IT MAY BE ANY INNOCENT THING WHICH CAPTURES OUR TIME, OUR AFFECTION OVER THE LOVE OF CHRIST, AND OUR MONEY. WHAT MAY BE PURELY FINE FOR ONE BELIEVER, COULD BE A SIN IN THE LIFE OF ANOTHER.
ILLLUSTRATION: A BOAT COULD BE A FINE HOBBY FOR ONE MAN, BUT FOR ANOTHER THAT BOAT COULD KEEP HIM AWAY FROM CHURCH, CAUSE HIM TO DEDICATE TOO MUCH TIME TO PLAY AND NOT SERVE THE LORD.
SO TOO COULD GOLF, HUNTING, -- EVEN CARING FOR A LADY'S HOUSE, HER HOBBY, ETC. WHATEVER TAKES US AWAY FROM BIBLE READING, PRAYER, CHURCH AND SERVICE TO THE LORD WILL STUNT OUR SPIRITUAL GROWTH AND CAUSE US TO FAIL TO BEAR FRUIT FOR GOD!
[20] And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred.
FINALLY! THE FRUIT BEARERS!
NOTICE THAT THERE ARE 30 FOLD, 60 FOLD AND 100 FOLD. IE, SOME WILL WIN 30 PEOPLE, SOME 60 AND SOME 100 MORE THAN THEMSELVES.
1. DIFFERENT PEOPLE ARE ABLE TO DO VARYING AMOUNTS, BUT ALL COULD DO SOMETHING.
2. THE LEAST IS 30 TIMES MORE THAN THE ONE WHO BEARS FRUIT. GOD'S MULTIPLYING OF OUR EFFORTS IS MAGNIFICANT!
2. Simple, Practical Basis a. THE LESSON HERE IS THAT WE ARE BOTH THE SOWER AND THE SOILSOWER - IT IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO SPREAD THE GOSPEL. MAT 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. [19] Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: [20] Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
THOUGH EVERYONE CANNOT PRODUCE GREAT HARVESTS, THEY CAN SOW. (1 COR 3:6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.)
LOCATION OF SEED - AN INTERESTING THING HERE ABOUT THE SEED --- DISCUSSION FOR YOUR CLASS
THE LAND ITSELF DETERMINED THE OUTCOME IN SOME WAYS. NOTICE THEIR CONDITION -- ACTIONS AND ATTITUDES -- DETERMINED THE RESULTS OF THE WORD THAT WAS SOWN!
3. TIPS FOR THE YOUNGER CLASSESHERE IS THE LESSON FOR VISUAL AIDES. MAKE THE BROADCASTER. BUT ALSO GET OUTDOORS AND DIG UP SOME PLANTS. IN PAPER CUPS, PLANT A SEED JUST BEFORE CLASS AND LABEL IT AS SUCH. IN CUP #2, HAVE A SEED THAT WAS PLANTED TOMORROW (MON. IN OUR CASE) - 6 DAYS LONGER. IN CUP #3, PLACE A SPROUT THAT IS GROWING IN YOUR YARD, ETC., AND IN A POT, BRING A PLANT THAT PRODUCES FLOWERS (THE BEGINNING OF SEEDS).
IN CLASS READ AND ACT OUT THE PARABLE. PICTURES OF COURSE ARE A GREAT HELP HERE! (KEEP MAGAZINES HANDY OR SCROUNGE THE DOCTOR OR DENTIST OFFICES.)
POUND SOME GROUND FLAT AND ASK IF ANY GOOD PLANTS GROW IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD.
THEN SHOW A PAN WITH THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF SOIL (TOOTH PICKS POKED INTO THE GROUND MAKE GREAT "THORNS") SAME QUESTIONS.
FINALLY SHOW SOIL (POTTING SOIL IS GREAT HERE!!). GOOD SOIL READY FOR THE SOWERS EFFORTS.
NEXT DIG UP THE VARIOUS CUPS AND SHOW THE VARIOUS DEVELOPMENT OF THE SEEDS THAT ARE GROWING.
TEACH THE CLASS THAT THE SOWER DOES NOT GO BACK AND DIG IN THE LIVES OF HIS SEEDS, OR ELSE THEY WILL NOT GROW. HIS TASK IS TO SOW. GOD MAKES THE SEEDS GROW.
4. DEMONSTRATIONS / ILLUSTRATIONS / SONGS / QUOTES (see Footnote 1) a.A chaplain who was ministering to a seriously wounded soldier was requested by the dying man to write a letter to his former Sunday School teacher. "Tell her I died a Christian because of what she taught me in that class in church. The memory of her earnest pleas and the warmth of her love as she asked us to accept Jesus have stayed with me. Tell her I'll meet her in Heaven." The message was sent, and some time later the chaplain received this reply: "May God forgive me. Just last month I resigned my position and abandoned my Sunday School pupils because I felt my work had been fruitless. How I regret my impatience and lack of faith! I shall ask my pastor to let me go back to teaching. I have learned that when one sows for God, the reaping is both sure and blessed!"
b.A brilliant young actor on his way to the theater was handed a Gospel tract by an elderly woman. He slipped it into his pocket and forgot all about it until he arrived at his hotel that night. After casually reading the message, he decided to review it more carefully. The truth so arrested him that the next morning he visited a minister who pointed him to the Savior. Forsaking the stage, he began studying at a seminary. That man was George C. Lorrimer who became the famous pastor of the Tremont Temple in Boston, Massachusetts!
c.A believer named George Smith was commissioned by the Moravians to serve in Africa. He was there just a short time when he was driven out of the country. He had won only a single convert - a destitute, uninfluential woman. He died a few months afterward, considered by many to have been a failure. Many years later other missionaries accidentally discovered the place where he had witnessed. They found a copy of the Scriptures he had left behind, and when they also met the one he had led to Christ, they learned that a church had been started. His mission board finally estimated that more than 13,000 converts sprang from George Smith's initial sowing!
d.A Swiss professor calculated that if nothing hindered or blighted a single grain of wheat, in only 8 years that lone kernel would multiply sufficiently to feed all the inhabitants of the earth for a whole year.
e.In the realm of spiritual sowing, the results of speaking a kind word or sharing a truth from the Bible are spectacular. John Oxenham underscores this fact in the following thought-provoking poem:
I spoke a word, And no one heard; I wrote a word, And no one cared Or seemed to heed; But after half a score of years It blossomed in a fragrant deed. Preachers and teachers all are we, Sowers of seed unconsciously. Our hearts are beyond our ken; Yet all we give may come again With usury of joy or pain. We never know To what one little word may grow. See to it,then, that all your seeds Be such as bring forth noble deeds. f.
An elderly lady was invited by some friends to enjoy the cool breezes and quiet atmosphere of their summer cottage. The owners, however, had a very large and spoiled dog. The house guest was given freedom to use the place and frequently occupied a large armchair which she found most restful. But, alas, she soon discovered it was also the spot where the owner's pet liked to relax. Being afraid of the animal, she never really dared to command her to get out of the comfortable chair, but instead would go to the window and call out, "Look, Tootsie, cats! CATS!" The dog would immediately rush over and bark furiously while she slipped quietly into the vacant seat. One day Tootsie entered the room and found that the guest had beaten her to her favorite resting place. Racing to the window and looking out, she suddenly acted very excited. Howling and barking ferociously, she began to scratch the walls with her front paws. The woman hastened to see what was the matter, and the dog seized the opportunity to jump into the empty chair. Apparently she had caught on to her trick! If animals are that smart, can we expect less discernment on the part of men? Deceit practiced on others will often be paid back in kind. g.
A wealthy widower deeded all his property to an only son and his wife on the condition that he would be allowed to live in the country with them for the rest of his life. After a few years, when the inheritance had been spent, the daughter-in-law got tired of having the elderly gentleman around and told her husband he would have to leave. The son agreed and broke the news to his father. A short time later he and the feeble old man walked down the dusty road to a state-supported home for senior citizens. Being very unsteady on his feet, the father finally asked if he could rest for a few moments on a sawed-off stump to regain his strength for the last mile of the journey. As he sat there, he suddenly put his head in his hands and began to sob. The son, pricked in his conscience, tried to make excuses. Finally his dad controlled himself enough to say, "I'm not crying so much because I'm going to this lonely home for the poor and unfortunate. I'm weeping because of my own sins. Forty years ago I walked down this road with my father and brought him to the very same place. I am now seeing the results of the evil deeds I have sown!" h.
The Gray and Adams Commentary relates the following story: "The Emperor Charlemagne wanted to have a magnificent bell cast for the church he had built. An artist named Tancho was employed by the church to make it. He was furnished, at his own request, with a great quantity of copper, and a hundred pounds of silver for the purpose. He kept the silver for his own personal use, however, and substituted in its place a quantity of highly purified tin. When the work was completed, he presented the bell to the Emperor, who had it suspended in the church tower. The people, however, were unable to ring it. So Tancho was called in to help. But he pulled so hard that its tongue fell down and killed him." 5. QUESTIONS YOU CAN ASK TO BRING OUT YOUR STUDENT'S MINDS AND LEVELS OF LEARNING: a.
I WOULD LIKE TO SOW (TELL OTHERS ABOUT THE LORD); I BELIEVE IT IS A BIBLE COMMAND, BUT I AM HONESTLY AFRAID. WHAT CAN I DO?
1. GO WITH ANOTHER.
2. HAND OUT GOSPEL TRACTS
3. PRAY FOR COURAGE
4. PRAY FOR SYMPATHETIC LISTENERS TO ASK YOU ABOUT YOUR FAITH.
5. ASK GOD TO SHOW YOU HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR SHARING OF THE GOSPEL.
b.ARE WE JUST TO LET THOSE WHO "FALL AWAY" AS IN THE PARABLE GO WITH NO THOUGHT FOR THEM?
NOT AT ALL. YOU MUST REMEMBER THAT THE SCRIPTURES GIVE US VERY CLEAR INSTRUCTION ON HOW TO DEAL WITH ONE ANOTHER, AND HOW TO LIVE OUR OWN LIVES. BUT, WE ARE ALSO EACH GIVEN A FREE WILL WHICH EVEN THE LORD GOD HIMSELF WILL NOT STEAL! IF GOD ALLOWS US TO CHOOSE OUR PATH OF EITHER SERVICE AND SURRENDER OR SPIRITUAL FAILURE, THEN HOW CAN WE ATTEMPT TO SUBDUE ANOTHER PERSON?
c.THE SOWER SPREAD THE SEED EVERYWHERE. WASN'T HE RESPONSIBLE TO SPREAD IT MORE ON THE GOOD GROUND?
HOW CAN WE WHO CANNOT KNOW THE HEART OF MAN KNOW WHAT GROUND THE LORD HAS PREPARED?
HOW CAN WE KNOW WHO HAS PREVIOUSLY TILLED IT AND WATERED IT IN PREPARATION FOR OUR OWN VISIT WITH THE SEED?
DO IT EVERYWHERE - TELL THE WONDROUS STORY OF JESUS!
d.WHAT SHALL I DO TO ASSURE THAT I DO NOT BECOME ONE OF THE UNFRUITFUL SEEDS?
GO BACK TO THE OUTLINE AND LOOK AT THE CAUSES FOR UNFRUITFULNESS. SEARCH YOU HEART AND LIFE FOR THESE. WHEN YOU FIND THEM, (AS WELL WE ALL MIGHT), THEN EITHER REPAIR THAT OR FIND HELP IN GETTING YOUR LIFE PATCHED UP.
6. APPLICATIONS a.HOW CAN I LEARN TO BE A BETTER SOWER? WHAT TRAINING IS AVAILABLE TO ME? HOW CAN I HELP OTHERS IN THE SAME WAY? b.
AM I ONE OF THE FRUIT-BEARERS OR ONE OF THE OTHERS WHO HEAR THE GOSPEL BUT BEAR NO FRUIT? WHAT CAN I DO TO IMPROVE? CAN I IMPROVE!? c.
DO I FEEL LIKE I AM NOT SUCCEEDING BECAUSE I CANNOT SEE RESULTS INSTANTLY, OR EVEN SOON?
HOW I WOULD TEACH THIS LESSON
READ THE OUTLINE EACH DAY AS A PART OF YOUR DEVOTIONS!
1. I WOULD READ THE TEXT IN CLASS
2. I WOULD HAVE THE DEMONSTRATIONS AVAILABLE FOR OBSERVATION AND DISCUSSION.
3. I WOULD DEVELOP THE EXPOSITORY AND INPUT THE DEMOS, ETC.
4. TELL SOME OF THE ILLUSTRATIONS
5. DISCUSS THE QUESTIONS AND APPLICATIONS.
6. MAKE PLANS TO INVITE SOMEONE TO MONDAY NIGHT VISITATION AND MAKE IT A TOP PRIORITY IN YOUR LIFE!!
Footnote 1: Please note that the use of a quote or a reference to a person does not indicate that we hold them in high esteem; only that the item can be used in some way in a lesson. In fact, you will find some statements actually oppose or disagree with Bible-believing philosophies in some outlines so that you can use them as arguing points.
